Your address matters more than your postcode

Two homes on the same road can have different options. One may be connected to full fibre while the house next door still relies on a copper line to a street cabinet. Virgin Media’s cable network can stop halfway along a street. Selecting your exact address gives you the most accurate list.

Reading your results

Your results group deals by the type of connection. In plain terms:

Label you may seeWhat it means for you
Full fibre (FTTP)Fibre runs all the way into your home. Fastest and most reliable option, usually from 74Mb to 900Mb or more.
CableVirgin Media’s own network. Very fast download speeds, with lower upload speeds than most full fibre.
Fibre (FTTC)Fibre to the green street cabinet, then copper to your home. Average download speeds of up to 74Mb.
5G home broadbandA mobile signal instead of a cable. No installation, but speed depends on signal strength indoors.

If your results only show part-fibre packages, full fibre may be on its way. Openreach and several other networks are still adding homes every week, and our full fibre explainer covers the differences in more detail.

If you see very few options

  • Check again with the full address rather than the first line of your postcode.
  • Look at 5G home broadband if your mobile signal is strong indoors.
  • Ask a smaller local full fibre network whether it plans to reach your street.
  • If no service gives you at least 10Mb download and 1Mb upload, you can ask for a decent connection under the broadband Universal Service Obligation. Ofcom explains the process on its website.
