Most UK broadband providers share the same underlying network, so the real differences come down to price, contract terms, extras and how easy they are to deal with when something goes wrong.
Each guide below explains who a provider suits, who should look elsewhere and what the contract really costs.
National providers
- BT
- Sky
- Virgin Media
- Vodafone
- Plusnet
- EE
- TalkTalk
- Rise Fibre
- Now Broadand
- Zen
- 4th Utility
- Fibrely
- Rebel Internet
- Onestream
If your home uses the Openreach network, BT, Sky, Vodafone, Plusnet and TalkTalk can all reach you, and the speed reaching your router will be much the same with each. That leaves you free to choose on price, rewards, router and support.
Virgin Media is different. It runs its own network, so availability depends on whether its cables reach your street. Smaller full fibre networks, often called altnets, also run their own lines and can offer faster upload speeds or fixed prices in the areas they cover.
Alt-net providers
- Community Fibre
- Hyperoptic
- YouFibre
- Zzoomm
- Kcom
- Gigaclear
- Gofibre
- Trooli
- Fibrus
- Lightspeed
