TalkTalk broadband: who it suits

TalkTalk built its name on cheap broadband over the Openreach network. In October 2026 its owner went into administration, and BT Group agreed to buy the business. TalkTalk is still trading and taking new customers, but its future shape depends on a competition review that is under way now.

Our simple pick: for new customers, we currently prefer rivals over TalkTalk. Vodafone and Sky both offer full fibre at 150Mb for less each month, with larger rewards. If you are already a TalkTalk customer, you don’t need to do anything right now; see the takeover section below.

The BT takeover and your account

On 5 October 2026, BT Group agreed to buy TalkTalk’s consumer business and its wholesale arm out of administration. The government has asked the Competition and Markets Authority to report on competition concerns by 19 October 2026, after which ministers decide whether the deal goes ahead and on what terms.

Until then, BT and TalkTalk are trading as separate companies. Ofcom has told TalkTalk customers:

  • You remain a TalkTalk customer and don’t need to do anything.
  • Your price, contract and billing don’t change.
  • Your broadband, landline and TV should keep working as normal.
  • If anything changes later, BT will contact affected customers directly with notice.

If you want to leave, check whether you are still in contract first. Leaving early can mean paying exit fees, as with any provider. Our guide to leaving a contract early explains your options.

We will update this page when the review concludes.

Who TalkTalk suits

  • Existing customers who are happy with their service and price.
  • Homes that want inclusive calls added on a rolling monthly basis rather than tied into the contract.
  • People who want a simple streaming TV box as a low-cost add-on.

Who should look elsewhere

  • New customers chasing the lowest price for full fibre. Several rivals currently beat TalkTalk’s monthly price at each speed.
  • Anyone on benefits looking for a social tariff, as TalkTalk does not offer a general one.

Price rises

TalkTalk adds a fixed amount each year on 1 April, set out in pounds and pence when you order.

Router and Wi-Fi

TalkTalk offers its Wi-Fi Hub, with full fibre packages using Amazon eero Wi-Fi 6 hardware that works with mesh extenders.
