Best broadband in the UK

For most homes that can get full fibre, our simple pick is Vodafone Full Fibre 150. It is one of the cheapest ways onto a full fibre connection from a major provider, it comes with a sizeable voucher, and 150Mb is plenty for a typical family.

It isn’t right for everyone. If you put customer service first, Plusnet is the safer choice. If you want the fastest speed for the least money and Virgin Media reaches your street, Gig1 is hard to beat.

Vodafone Full Fibre 150: our pick for most homes

Vodafone uses the Openreach network and CityFibre’s network for full fibre, so it reaches a large share of homes that have been upgraded. The 150Mb average download speed copes with several HD or 4K streams at once, video calls and online gaming in a home of four or five people.

The voucher brings the real monthly cost down further, and set-up is free. The router is Vodafone’s Wi-Fi 6 Power Hub.

The catch is service. Vodafone has been among the more complained-about broadband providers in recent Ofcom complaint reports. If that worries you, our customer service pick costs a little more and has a far better record.

Who should look elsewhere: anyone who wants a TV bundle, anyone who needs a contract shorter than 24 months, and homes where Vodafone full fibre isn’t available yet.

Plusnet Full Fibre 145: best for customer service

Plusnet is part of BT Group and uses the Openreach network. It has been one of the least complained-about providers in Ofcom’s recent reports, and its support has a long-standing reputation for being easy to deal with. You get a Reward Card and the Plusnet Hub Two router.

The trade-off is simplicity. Plusnet only offers broadband, with no TV and no inclusive calls, and its full fibre upload speeds are modest.

Virgin Media Gig1: most speed for the money

Virgin Media runs its own network rather than using Openreach, and it reaches over half of UK homes. Gig1 delivers an average download speed over 1Gb for a monthly price close to many 150Mb deals.

Upload speed is the weak point compared with the best full fibre networks, and Virgin Media’s annual rise is among the larger ones. There is no reward on this deal.

Vodafone Full Fibre 910: best gigabit full fibre

If your home is on CityFibre’s network, Vodafone’s fastest package gives you an upload speed that is the same as the download speed. That matters for anyone uploading large files or streaming themselves online. On the Openreach network, the upload speed is lower but still respectable.

Sky: best for TV and broadband together

Sky’s broadband is competitively priced, and its TV packages remain the most complete on offer, with Sky Stream boxes and no satellite dish. Sky doesn’t fix its rises in pounds and pence in the same way as most rivals; its terms say prices may change during the contract. Read our Sky guide for what that means for your right to leave.

Rebel 550: best if you hate price rises

Rebel promises a fixed price for the full 12-month contract and uses the Openreach network, so it is widely available. It costs more each month than the big names, but you know exactly what you will pay, and you are free to move after a year.

Choosing between them

  • Want the lowest real cost: Vodafone Full Fibre 150.
  • Want help to be easy when something goes wrong: Plusnet.
  • Want the most speed and Virgin Media reaches you: Gig1.
  • Want Sky TV channels: Sky.
  • Want certainty and a short contract: Rebel.

FAQs

Which broadband provider is best in the UK?

There isn’t a single winner for every home. On price and coverage, Vodafone is our pick for most homes. On customer service, Plusnet has the better record. On raw speed, Virgin Media leads where its network reaches.

Is full fibre worth it over standard fibre?

Usually, yes. Full fibre packages often cost the same as or less than part-fibre ones, and they deliver steadier speeds in the evening. Our full fibre explainer covers the differences.

Do I need gigabit broadband?

Most homes don’t. A household of four can stream, game and work comfortably on 150Mb to 300Mb. Gigabit is worth it for very busy homes or anyone who regularly moves large files.

Will my price go up?

With most major providers, yes. The table above shows the price from April 2027 for each pick. See our price rise guide for every provider.
