Sky broadband: who it suits

Sky is the obvious choice if you want Sky TV and broadband from one company. Its broadband-only prices are also sharper than many people assume: Full Fibre 150, Full Fibre 75 and Superfast all cost the same each month right now, and the gigabit Gigafast package costs only a little more.

Our simple pick: Sky Full Fibre 150 for broadband alone, or Full Fibre 150 with Essential TV if you want Sky channels. If your home is already on full fibre, there is no reason to choose a slower Sky package at the same price.

Who Sky suits

  • Anyone who wants Sky Sports, Sky Atlantic or Sky Cinema without a satellite dish, through a Sky Stream box.
  • Homes on full fibre that want gigabit speed at a modest premium over 150Mb.
  • People who like the option of Sky’s mesh Wi-Fi add-on, which is included with Gigafast.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Heavy uploaders. Sky’s upload speeds on full fibre are lower than those of several rivals at similar prices.
  • Anyone who wants a contract shorter than 24 months.
  • Buyers who value a fixed future price. Most rivals set out their rises in pounds and pence; Sky’s terms leave the amount open.

Sky price rises and your right to leave

Sky has historically raised prices each April. Its broadband terms say prices may change during the minimum term, rather than listing a fixed future price for each year.

That difference matters. Under Ofcom rules, if a provider raises your price beyond what was clearly set out in pounds and pence when you signed up, it must give you at least a month’s notice and let you leave without an exit fee. Sky has also shown upcoming April rises to some new customers at the point of sale, and a rise disclosed that way forms part of what you agreed. Read your contract summary and any price change notice carefully. If you are on a TV bundle, check how exit fees apply to the TV part of your contract.

Networks

Sky uses the Openreach network for most of its broadband and CityFibre’s network in some full fibre areas. Your postcode check shows which applies to your home.

Router and Wi-Fi

Sky offers its Sky Broadband Hub with every package. Sky WiFi Max adds mesh boosters and Sky’s promise of a strong signal throughout the home. It is a monthly add-on on most packages and included with Gigafast.

Social tariff

Sky Broadband Basics is available to customers on Universal Credit, Pension Credit and several other benefits, with no exit fees. Our social tariff guide compares it with other providers.

FAQs

Can I get Sky broadband without Sky TV?

Yes. Sky offers broadband-only packages, and they are among the cheaper ways onto full fibre from a major provider.

Do I need a satellite dish for Sky TV?

No. Sky Stream delivers Sky TV over your broadband connection.

Can I leave Sky if the price goes up?

If a rise was not set out in pounds and pence when you signed up, Ofcom rules give you the right to leave without an exit fee after being notified. Check the notice from Sky for the deadline.

Is Sky Gigafast worth it?

For busy homes on full fibre, yes. The current gap between Full Fibre 150 and Gigafast is small, and Gigafast includes Sky’s mesh Wi-Fi add-on.
