Plusnet broadband: who it suits

Plusnet is broadband without the extras. There is no TV, no inclusive calls and no bundle to untangle, just a connection over the Openreach network and a support team with a good reputation. It is part of BT Group, but it usually costs less than BT itself.

Our simple pick: Plusnet Full Fibre 145. Its Reward Card brings the effective monthly cost below most rivals at a similar speed, and 145Mb is plenty for a typical family.

Who Plusnet suits

  • People who want broadband to just work, with help that is easy to reach when it doesn’t.
  • Homes that already get TV through Freeview, a streaming stick or a separate subscription.
  • Anyone who uses a mobile for all their calls.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Homes that need a landline. Plusnet’s packages are broadband only, and moving to Plusnet disconnects an existing landline service and its number.
  • Anyone relying on a telecare alarm or another device that uses a phone line. Check how it will work before you switch.
  • Heavy uploaders. Plusnet’s full fibre upload speeds are similar to BT’s, well below the download speed.

Service record

Plusnet has been among the least complained-about broadband providers in Ofcom’s recent complaint reports, It pays compensation for delayed repairs, missed engineer appointments and late starts, and it is signed up to Ofcom’s broadband speeds code of practice. Under that code, if your speed drops below the minimum guaranteed at sign-up and Plusnet can’t fix it within 30 days, you can leave without an exit fee.

Price rises

Plusnet adds a fixed amount every year on 31 March, set out in pounds and pence when you order. The table shows the exact prices for each year of a new contract.

Router

Plusnet offers the Hub Two with its full fibre packages, the same hardware as BT’s Smart Hub 2. It also includes Plusnet SafeGuard parental controls and, on most packages, a Norton security subscription.

Social tariff

Plusnet doesn’t have its own social tariff. Customers who receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit and certain other benefits can move to BT Home Essentials. Our social tariff guide lists the details.
