Virgin Media Home Phone – Call Plans, Features and Costs

Virgin Media Home Phone, also called Virgin Phone, lets you make and receive calls using your Virgin Media broadband connection. You can keep your existing telephone and usually transfer your current home phone number.

You can add Virgin Phone to M125, M250, M350, M500 or Gig1 broadband where the service is available. Virgin Media also offers broadband, TV and phone bundles. However, home phone service is not available in some newer full fibre network areas.

How does Virgin Media Home Phone work?

Virgin Media’s newer home phone service uses digital voice technology instead of a traditional copper phone line. Simply connect your compatible telephone to the phone port on your Virgin Media Hub using the supplied adapter.

You can make calls as normal, but the Hub must be switched on and your broadband connection must be working. If you have several cordless phones connected to one base station, you only need to plug the base station into the Hub.

The service works with compatible Virgin Media Hubs, including Hub 3, Hub 4 and Hub 5. See our Virgin Media Wi-Fi Hub guide for more information.

Virgin Media Home Phone features

Free voicemail

Virgin Phone includes basic voicemail for most customers. Callers can leave a message when you are unavailable. You can also add Voicemail Plus, which lets you access your messages from another telephone.

Caller Display and call privacy

Caller Display shows incoming numbers on compatible telephones. You can hide your own number for individual calls by dialling 141 before the telephone number.

Virgin Media also offers Anonymous Caller Rejection to block calls from withheld numbers.

Call Waiting and Call Divert

Call Waiting alerts you when another person calls during an existing conversation. Call Divert sends incoming calls to another number, such as your mobile, when needed.

Some calling features are included following the digital voice switchover, while others may depend on your account or require an additional charge.

Three-way calling

You can speak with two other people on the same call using Three-way Calling. This is great for family conversations when everyone is in a different location.

International calling

International Anytime Chatter includes calls to 50 destinations, with restrictions depending on the destination and number type. Virgin Media also offers international calling add-ons for customers who occasionally call abroad.

Emergency backup service

Your normal home phone will stop working during a power cut or broadband outage. However, Virgin Media offers an Emergency Backup Line for customers who rely on their landline or cannot use a mobile phone.

The backup equipment switches to the mobile network during an outage and provides approximately eight hours of standby battery life or one hour of talk time. Mobile coverage is required.

Virgin Media Home Phone FAQs

Can I use my Virgin Media home phone when the Hub is in modem mode?

Yes. On compatible Hubs, the digital phone service continues working in modem mode. However, the Hub must remain powered on and connected to Virgin Media’s network.

Can I keep using my telephone in another room?

Yes, but you may need an engineer to connect your existing telephone extension wiring. If you use several cordless handsets connected to one base station, only that base station needs to connect to the Hub.

How long does it take to transfer my existing home phone number?

Virgin Media says transferring a telephone number can take up to 10 days. Request the transfer when ordering and avoid cancelling your existing phone service separately before the transfer is arranged.

Can I use Virgin Phone with a medical or security alarm?

Some alarms may not work with digital voice, particularly during power cuts. Check compatibility with your alarm provider before switching. Virgin Media can arrange additional support for customers who rely on telecare equipment.

Can I get Virgin Media Home Phone without broadband?

Virgin Media’s current home phone offers are generally provided with broadband packages. Standalone home phone availability is limited, so check with Virgin Media if you only need a telephone service.
