BT broadband: who it suits

BT is the default choice for a lot of UK homes, and it earns that partly through reach. It uses the Openreach network, which covers almost every home in the country, and its full fibre packages run from 150Mb to 900Mb.

You usually pay a little more for BT than for providers using the same lines. In return you get one of the larger Reward Cards on the market, free access to EE’s Wi-Fi hotspots and TV bundles that can be changed each month.

Our simple pick: BT Full Fibre 500. With its current Reward Card, it costs little more over the contract than BT’s 150Mb package, while giving a busy home far more bandwidth.

All packages are on a 24-month contract with no set-up fee. Prices for new customers ordering online, checked on 15 October 2026.

Notice that Full Fibre 150 costs less than Fibre 2. If full fibre reaches your home, the part-fibre packages are rarely worth choosing.

Who BT suits

  • Homes that want a well-known name with UK-based support.
  • Households that want to add TV channels such as TNT Sports or Sky Sports without a long TV commitment.
  • People who use public Wi-Fi often, thanks to free access to EE’s network of hotspots.
  • Anyone in a rural area where Openreach is the only fixed-line network.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Price-focused buyers. Plusnet, also part of BT Group, uses the same network and usually costs less each month.
  • Heavy uploaders. BT’s upload speeds are a fraction of its download speeds, so content creators may prefer a provider with an upload speed that is the same as the download speed.

Price rises

BT adds a fixed amount every year on 31 March, set out in pounds and pence when you sign up. The amount is larger for broadband and TV bundles than for broadband alone. The table above shows the exact prices for each year of the contract.

Router and Wi-Fi

BT offers the Smart Hub 2 with every broadband package. It is a capable dual-band router that covers most flats and average-sized houses well. For larger homes, BT’s Complete Wi-Fi add-on uses mesh discs and comes with BT’s promise of a strong signal in every room, backed by a money-back guarantee.

Calls and TV

BT home phone service now uses Digital Voice, which runs through your router rather than the old copper phone network. Call packages are optional add-ons.

The TV service, now branded EE TV, comes with a box and channel packs for entertainment and sport that you can change each month without penalty.

BT and TalkTalk

In October 2026, BT Group agreed to buy TalkTalk out of administration. The deal is under review by the Competition and Markets Authority, and the two companies are trading separately in the meantime. Nothing changes for BT customers today. Our TalkTalk guide covers what it means for TalkTalk customers.

Social tariff

BT Home Essentials is one of the most widely available social tariffs in the UK and is open to BT, EE and Plusnet customers. See our social tariff guide.

FAQs

Does BT use the Openreach network?

Yes. Openreach is BT Group’s network business, and BT broadband uses the Openreach network for both part-fibre and full fibre packages.

Is BT broadband worth the extra cost?

It can be, if you value the Reward Card, the TV options and the support. If you only want broadband at the lowest price, Plusnet or Vodafone on the same lines usually costs less.

Does BT pay my exit fees if I switch?

BT has offered credit towards early termination charges for customers switching from another provider. Check the current offer and its terms on BT’s order page before relying on it.

Do I need a landline with BT broadband?

No. You can take broadband alone. If you want a home phone, BT provides it through Digital Voice.
